A YORK woman today told how a car smashed through her garden fence and badly damaged it.

Jean Close, from Moor Monkton, was enjoying a peaceful Sunday morning yesterday when the Vauxhall Corsa car crashed through her fence after a collision on the A59.

Four people were taken to hospital after the accident, which occurred at about 11am, and also involved a Ford Escort.

The driver of the Escort was taken to York District Hospital with minor injuries. A driver and two passengers in the Corsa were taken to Harrogate District Hospital, also with minor injuries.

Jean said: "I heard a very slight thud but I did not take much notice as I was talking on the telephone.

"I then saw other cars pulling up and went to the window and there was a car through my very strong fence poking into my garden.

"I was shocked, my first thought was: 'Oh my, God there is another car in my garden'."

It is the third time Jean has had vehicles smash through her fence. In 1993 a wagon loaded with steel crashed through into her garden and in 1998 a car did the same.

She said: "Unless the speed on the A59 is cut down it is going to happen again. Drivers are so impatient they are not prepared to slow down to let anyone turn."
