RUSH-hour traffic was held up on the A64 near York today after a fire broke out in a lorry trailer loaded with clothing.
Firefighters were called to a lay-by just before the Grimston Lodge turn-off, near the road's junction with the A1079 Hull Road, at 6.48am when the fire was spotted in the 40ft trailer, which was carrying about 100 boxes of clothes.
It is believed the lorry was heading along the eastbound carriageway when the fire started, possibly in an axle, and spread to the cargo.
One lane of the eastbound carriageway was closed while firefighters tackled the blaze, and traffic tailed back on to the nearby A19 Fulford Road. It reopened at 7.51am.
An underpass was opening this afternoon on the A64 at Copmanthorpe, near York. The underpass will provide a safe crossing under the dual carriageway for motorists, replacing the notorious traffic lights and gap in the central reservation.
