BETTER late than never, victory Garlands flourished at the double for the Oaks Golf Club in the York Union of Golf Clubs' Pike Hills Cup.

Played at Boothferry GC, early morning starters father and son Jack and Martin Garland made light work of the fog which lingered over the course to produce an excellent foursomes medal gross score of 73.

It was enough to secure the cup, the first of the season for the Oaks in the last YUGC trophy event of the year.

In the Garlands' wake were three Fulford pairings of Dave Rose and Andy Robson (75), Steve Smith and Gary Oxley (76) and Nigel Lewis and former boxing king Henry Wharton (77).

The nett prizes were collected by Jim Batt and Dave Wharton (Heworth) 68, D Richardson and D Easton (Boothferry Park) and AW Marshall and M Atkinson (Forest of Galtres) 69.5.

CLUB champion Mark Christie signed off a spectacular 2002 season in style.

Christie carded a magnificent 74 gross (68 nett) to win the final men's competition of the season, the L A Knowlson (medal) Trophy. He was followed home closely by runner-up Simon Arnold 79-10-68.

Christie received his prize at the annual prize-giving by Mrs Olive Willis.

The ladies' prize-giving was dominated by course record-holder Gay Enos, who won six trophies, including the ladies' section's golfer of the year award.

KILNWICK Percy GC's young daredevil duo of Matthew Burrows and Thomas Gowthorpe produced a creditable performance in the final of the International pairs competition finals held in Ireland.

The Kilnwick pair totalled 63 points for a mid-table finish in the event which was won by fellow youngsters Adam Young and Steve Thomas from the St Mary's club from South Wales. They topped the gathering of 40 teams from across Britain with 79 points, two ahead of their nearest challengers at the prestigious Mount Wolseley course.

FOREST PARK'S Lady Captains Charity Cup was won by Carmen Batty, who edged out Fiona Crossley on a back nine count-back after both had rounds of 71.

The Forest Park lady captain's charity this year is the Stroke Association.

PIKE Hills GC player David Johnson has achieved his first hole in one using a nine-iron on his home course's 138-yard 15th hole.

JUNE Hutt won Fulford Golf Club ladies section annual medal with a nett 77, two strokes ahead of Ann Topping.
