HOTELS and visitor attractions in York were today gearing up for one of the busiest weekends of the year.

With half-term coming to an end for children in North Yorkshire and starting next week for those in York, the city was expected to be heaving with visitors.

York Tourism Bureau spokeswoman Kay Hyde said the city was extremely busy with local visitors and those from Scotland, Germany, the United States, Canada and the Netherlands.

She said: "This half-term weekend is traditionally one of the busiest weekends of the year.

"The telephones have been red hot and staff have been taking non-stop accommodation bookings. York is not full, but I would advise people to ring ahead because we are busy."

Gillian Neild, spokeswoman for Jorvik, said: "We have had a pretty busy week already with queues here and there and we are expecting next week to be a lot busier.

Sue Matthewman, spokeswoman for the National Rail Museum, said lots of families were expected to take advantage of the free entry to the museum.
