I WONDER if many people noted the death last Saturday of jazz trombonist Ray Conniff, at the age of 85. He was a very well known figure who played in the orchestras of Bob Crosby and Artie Shaw and turned out very many big band arrangements in the early days of the long-play records.
It was his band arrangement of the tune S'Wonderful that impressed the producers at Columbia Records, but it is sad that nearly 100 years after Ray was born in Massachusetts, all it takes to impress a record producer is an out of tune wannabe singer, which one journalist jokingly refers to as Macmusic.
