A YORK riverside path is to be replaced because the existing bank is collapsing in places and is in a dangerous state.

City of York Council will be starting work on the footpath behind numbers 20 to 90 Huntington Road during the week commencing Monday, November 11. The work will last for 16 weeks.

Due to the narrow width of the path it will be necessary to carry out the works under a footpath road closure, which is currently in place for safety reasons.

All those in the vicinity of the works should have received a letter explaining the situation.

Mike Tavener, project manager (Structures and Drainage), said: "The contractor, Sangwin Ltd, will be excavating the existing, decaying towpath and replacing it with rot-proof recycled plastic piling and planking. This was successfully carried out in an upstream length three years ago.

"The river is also being cleared of debris and overgrowth to restore a beautiful and popular riverside walkway."

Meanwhile it has been revealed that remedial work being carried out at Stirling Road between the A1237 and Audax Road at Clifton Moor, York, has been delayed by the recent bad weather, resulting in the temporary road closure there being extended.

Stirling Road will now reopen on Saturday, November 9.

The work started at the beginning of October, to carry out essential carriageway maintenance.

It includes carriageway resurfacing and the replacement of sections of kerbing.
