COUNCIL chiefs are to explore the merits of using postal votes in next year's elections.

Members of City of York Council's executive agreed last night to look at arrangements for using postal voting to ensure more people took the opportunity to have their say.

Councillors heard that postal voting had been a success in other areas of the country - such as Gateshead - where turnout had doubled.

But reservations were expressed about the secrecy of postal votes, and members have instructed council officers to look at ways of ensuring that any new system would protect the traditional anonymity of the ballot.
