FREE computer training for adults to help them bridge the "digital divide" has been made available by two York community groups.

The Get Connected! project aims to provide free computer workshops for families in the Tang Hall area who have a child of school age.

Workers at Future Prospects and Community Regeneration York have joined forces to provide ten recycled and reconditioned computers and the training and guidance skills needed to utilise them.

They are inviting adults to take part in a six-week course which will then enable them to start a nationally-recognised qualification.

Dave Fleming, of Future Prospects, said the initiative was designed to help individuals bridge the digital divide so they could participate more readily in today's high-tech society.

He said: "Computers are now a part of everyday life, with IT skills becoming an essential skill in many areas of employment."

He said it could also enable parents to take a more active role in their children's school learning.

The course starts on Friday, at Tang Hall Library, Fifth Avenue, and continues until December 13.

Mr Fleming said that if the course was a success, the scheme could be rolled out across the city.

He said: "It's a wonderful opportunity for residents to engage in learning and for us to promote family learning and community education."

Ten places are available on the course. To enrol, or find out more information, call Future Prospects on 01904 634748.
