LORD HASKINS, of Britain In Europe, will pit himself against Martin Vander Weyer of Business for Sterling in a euro debate and lunch at Le Meridien Hotel, York, on Monday.

The debate, organised by the York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency, will be chaired by Liz Page, Editor of the Evening Press.

There will be no charge to hear the two men debate the euro issue.

Lord Haskins, a director of Yorkshire Forward, has been a member of the House of Lords for four years, and was until February chairman of Northern Foods.

He has worked for both the British and Irish Governments and advised Prime Minister Tony Blair on rural recovery in the UK after the outbreak of foot and mouth last year.

Mr Vander Weyer, a North Yorkshire author and freelance journalist, writes on political and economic issues in the Daily Mail, the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph, and The Spectator.

Before becoming a journalist he spent 15 years as an investment banker in London, Brussels, Eastern Europe and the Far East.
