A MUCH-LOVED former pub landlady was today celebrating her 100th birthday in York.

Edith Moore, who now lives in the Westminster Nursing Home, in Osbaldwick, was enjoying a special party with family, friends, and other residents.

She was born in Castleford, West Yorkshire, and started her pub career behind the bar in the Ryther Arms, at Ryther, near Selby.

Her granddaughter, Liz Mayes, said Edith spent "many happy years there," before taking over the Jolly Sailor, at Cawood.

She pulled her last pint, at the age of 74, at the New Inn, Easingwold.

Liz, who works as a carer at Edith's nursing home, said: "She was a lovely landlady, she got on well with all her customers and loved a laugh.

"When she wasn't working she would take a walk in the countryside. She liked to do eight to ten miles a day.

"That used to help keep her fit and healthy, and she kept it up until she was about 85."

Edith has one daughter, Daureen Wakenshaw, three granddaughters, Liz, Susan Allen and Julie Ratcliffe, nine great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter, Abigail, who is three.

Liz said: "She absolutely loves seeing all the family. Although she is 100 now, she is very well. She loves life and still loves a laugh.

"If you asked her the secret to a long life I'm sure she would say it was making sure you get plenty of fresh air and lots of sunshine."
