SPOT checks on Thirsk and Northallerton taxi drivers have uncovered an alarming catalogue of offences.

A total of five vehicles were immediately ordered off the road last weekend following a joint operation between Hambleton Council, police and government agencies. Out of 18 taxis stopped, a number had out-of-date tax discs, three drivers were without identification badges, and one car had no fire extinguisher. Illegal tyre limits and faulty lights were also among the list of offences.

A police spokesman said drivers would be prosecuted as a result of the operation, the first of its kind in the district. Hambleton District Council's head of corporate services, Cyril Dyke, said the operation clearly highlighted the need for regular checks.

"We were very surprised to uncover so many offences amongst our taxi drivers, some of which will result in prosecutions," said Mr Dyke. "We will not be treating this lightly."
