ONE-TIME York City ace Jonathan Greening could be a surprise inclusion in today's England squad.

National coach Sven-Goran Eriksson was to name a squad for a get-together as part of his campaign to keep the England spirit alive this winter before the European Championship qualifying campaign resumes next spring.

Greening, who was the star of Middlesbrough's toppling of Premiership leaders Liverpool on Saturday, could well be the latest candidate asked to solve England's left-side dilemma.

The 22-year-old, who made 25 appearances for the Minstermen before moving to Manchester United four years ago in a transfer that ultimately yielded more than a £1million to City, has previously won 18 Under-21 caps.

But with Boro boss, York-born Steve McClaren - Eriksson's number two until ten days ago - championing his cause Greening may get a call-up to the senior ranks.

One youngster unlikely to get the call is Everton's teenage sensation Wayne Rooney. The striker, who has just turned 17, has been pushed forward for inclusion but Eriksson may feel the glare of the spotlight might be too much just yet.

Erikkson could be forgiven for feeling a little distracted today when he announces his squad.

At around the same time, the Football Association executive board were set to meet for discussions which could have a major impact on the head coach's long-term future.
