FAMILIES in York are being urged to reap the benefits of new tax breaks set to be introduced next year.
From April, the Child Tax Credit and the Working Tax Credit will replace current credits, and York MP Hugh Bayley wants people who think they might be entitled to the new tax credits to apply for them.
As the Child Tax Credit is not dependent on being in paid work, student nurses and students will qualify for it for the first time. And because Working Tax Credit is not dependent on having children, more low-paid people will get extra help.
Mr Bayley joined John Parker, his wife Rachel and children, Catherine and Heather, at their home in York to promote the new credits.
Mr Parker has been claiming tax credits for five years and currently gets an additional £26 per week.
"It has made the difference between being able to live frugally and comfortably," he said.
Mr Bayley said: "For the first time people on lower incomes without children will get help through the Working Tax Credit, and families not currently eligible for the Working Families Tax Credit will get help."
