AT the eleventh hour today, busy Britain fell silent.

Yesterday, old soldiers stood in quiet reflection during services of remembrance held at war memorials across the country. Other traditions may fade, but this one prevails: we do remember them.

This remembrance season is especially poignant for two reasons. It marks the 20th anniversary of the Falklands War which claimed many young lives. Moreover, it is impossible not to contemplate the perils to come, as our forces remain on standby for a potential war with Iraq. It has never been more timely to consider the consequences of conflict.
