A NEW group of MPs and peers set up to focus on ways to tackle heart disease have heard from Britain's heart tsar, York consultant cardiologist Dr Roger Boyle, pictured.

Lord Smith of Clifton was among those attending the reception of the new All-Party Parliamentary Group on Heart Disease, hosted by the British Heart Foundation at Westminster. The group heard a report from Dr Boyle, national director of heart disease, on the progress of the national service framework for coronary heart disease, which sets standards for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease - the single most common cause of death in the UK. At the reception, MPs had the chance to learn more about the causes, preventative measures, treatment and care of heart patients. Lord Smith said: "Heart disease has touched many of our lives and those of our families and friends here in Yorkshire. It is very important to me that Yorkshire people receive the highest quality diagnosis, treatment and care."
