POLICE were today investigating after the body of a man was found in a ditch close to the Nestl factory in Wigginton Road, York.

He has been named as Lorenzo Crosswaite, aged 52, known as "Laurie", from Crabmill Lane, Easingwold. A cyclist discovered his body at about 1pm yesterday.

It has emerged that he could have been lying in the ditch since last Friday, possibly after becoming the victim of a road accident.

A post-mortem examination failed to identify the cause of death but a road accident has not been ruled out, a police spokesman said.

The body was discovered in the 3ft deep ditch close to the B1363, between the two entrances to the factory, just next to the level crossing on the York to Scarborough line.

Police are seeking witnesses to any collision on the B1363 or anyone who saw a man walking along the main road after 8pm on Friday.

The police spokesman said: "Detectives are sure there would have been plenty of traffic on Wigginton Road throughout the evening."

Anyone with information should contact York CID on 01904 631321

A man who works nearby but wished not to be named said today: "It's really shocking.

"If he was hit by a car it wouldn't surprise me. People drive too fast along here."
