A NEW choir in York aims to get the community singing its praises.

York Youth Chorus is staging workshops to recruit members.

Run by a team of experienced musicians and supported by York East Arts, the choir will be rehearsing in Tang Hall from January. The area is seen by many as having few opportunities for youngsters to participate in music.

Musical director Toby Wardman said: "We aim to be performing regularly to make a name for ourselves in our first season."

The choir welcomes all youngsters between the ages of eight and 18 and there is no charge.

Workshops will be held on Saturday at Our Lady's RC Primary School, Acomb, and on November 30 at Wigginton Primary School, at 2.30pm. A further workshop will be held in Tang Hall on the following Saturday at a venue to be announced.
