SIX wards at York District Hospital remained closed to admissions today as 34 patients recovered from the Norwalk virus.

The number of patients suffering from the diarrhoea and vomiting virus remained the same as yesterday.

But a spokeswoman for York Health Services NHS Trust said the majority of these were on the mend and she was expecting a number of wards to reopen later in the day.

She said: "Although the numbers are the same, it's a better picture than yesterday. Most of those are recovering. Hopefully some of those wards will be opened later."

No staff are now suffering symptoms and treatment and surgery is being carried out as normal.

Over the past three weeks, more than 200 patients and staff have been struck by the virus in what is the worst Norwalk outbreak at the hospital for two years.
