MORE than 500 students from York joined forces today to campaign against student hardship as part of a national demonstration.

Students from York St John College and the University of York travelled to London to march through the streets with a giant cheque for £150 million.

The sum represents the total debt of all the students in higher and further education studying in York, calculated from an average individual debt of £10,000.

The York group are participating in the National Union of Students campaign for the scrapping of tuition fees and the removal of the threat of top-up fees. York St John Students' Union president George Brichieri said: "Increasingly students going into higher education are local, therefore it is imperative that York residents and the wider region help protect the state of higher education."

University of York Students' Union president Tom Connor said: "The Government needs to respond to the demands of the workforce of tomorrow, and we hope that this demonstration will put pressure on Tony Blair to listen to us"
