FORMER York City chairman Douglas Craig has turned down a plea from supporters' pressure group the Friends of Bootham Crescent (FoBC) to help the club out of its current financial crisis.

In a brief letter to the group, Mr Craig, who is chairman and majority shareholder in Bootham Crescent Holdings (BCH) - the company that owns the club's ground - said he did not intend to act upon their request "to do the right thing".

FoBC had appealed to BCH to sell the ground to the York City Supporters' Trust not for profit but at the price - believed to be £200,000 - of the original share issue in York City.

FoBC spokesperson Ian Savage condemned Mr Craig's decision to turn down their plea at a time when the club's future has been thrown into doubt by mounting financial problems.

"With York City in financial dire straits, BCH have the opportunity to step in and help to avoid the closure of the club," explained Savage.

"They seem to have decided against doing so. It seems an appalling stand to take when Mr Craig himself claimed that BCH was only ever formed to benefit York City FC and protect its assets."

Savage said the offer of a meeting with the BCH board was still on the table.
