AN APPEAL for Christmas gifts for underprivileged children proved a real success at Acomb Primary School, York, with more than 50 boxes of presents collected.

The school council organised the collection of boxes full of stationery, toys and toiletries, which is part of a national campaign by the Samaritans Purse charity.

The boxes were picked up by staff at Dixons, of Clifton Moor, before being sent out to children suffering from poverty.

Head teacher Howard Robinson said he was very pleased the school council had organised the appeal.

He said: "The school council gives the children a sense of ownership and responsibility - it is a valuable part of school life.

"It shows the children have a heightened sense of social responsibility, both through this initiative and various others."
