MY attention has been drawn to the article reporting the York Without Walls conference (November 27). In it I am referred to as Professor of Social Injustice at the University of Hull.
Social justice is concerned with issues of human rights, poverty and deprivation, with ensuring a respect for diversity and difference, and with encouraging the participation of all in policy-making.
Were I to be a Professor of Social Injustice, presumably I would be studying and promoting support for the opposing issues.
I am not Professor of Social Injustice, nor am I for that matter Professor of Terrorism, Genocide, Exploitation or Greed.
The serious point I was trying to make in my speech is that a vision of York for the future has to encompass the views and interests of the poorest and most marginalised people and that this will not happen by chance: it has to underpin all policy and service developments over the next years.
Gary Craig,
Professor of social justice,
University of Hull,
Hull.
