POACHERS looking to bag a Christmas salmon are being warned they will be caught and prosecuted.
The warning from the Environment Agency comes after two alleged poachers were arrested in Redcar last week following a tip-off from a member of the public.
Anyone found guilty of poaching can face fines of up to £25,000 or six months in prison.
Agency fisheries team leader John Shannon said illegal poaching often increased this time of year in line with the Christmas seasons culinary demands.
"At this time of year we get people trying to catch salmon and sea trout for their Christmas menu," he said.
"However, it's illegal to fish for either out of season, as the fish are currently trying to spawn and killing them can have a serious detrimental effect on future fish stocks.
"We're urging anyone who sees anything suspicious or is offered fresh salmon or sea trout that is not farmed to get in touch with us."
Rivers will be strictly patrolled throughout the "off" season. Anyone wishing to report poaching or other environmental incidents can call 0800 807060.
