AN important national rail training scheme has seen success with its first set of graduates.

Twenty-three GNER train drivers and nine Railtrack signallers have completed assessment awards at York College.

The students successfully negotiated NVQ2 assessment awards - the result of a partnership with GNER, Virgin and Railtrack, now Network Rail.

York College worked with the three rail companies to design assessments for rail signallers and train drivers in Yorkshire, the North East and South East.

The successful students were presented with their awards at the Dean Court Hotel and GNER's training centre at York Station.

The college is also delighted with the news that the scheme is to continue - with another 61 trainees in the pipeline.

Alan Symms, engineering projects manager at York College, said: "York is still very much a key player in the railway industry and the college realise there is a skills shortage in the region, and nationally.

"We are keen to see trainees go forward into the railways and also to up-skill those already employed in the industry. It is hoped these awards will be the first of many."
