Five wards at York District Hospital remained closed today as the number of people struck by a diarrhoea and vomiting virus continued to rise.

Five days after the first symptoms were spotted, 55 patients and nine staff were said to be suffering, up from 46 and eight yesterday.

The virus, which has yet to be identified by laboratory tests, comes after last month's outbreak of Norwalk virus, which affected more than 200 patients and staff and closed seven wards.
