AN eyesore branded "Beirut" by York residents could have its future sealed next week.

Sanderson House, in Chapelfields, Acomb, is expected to be torn down after City of York Council planners meet.

The three-storey building, which used to house shops and flats, has been badly affected by crime and vandalism.

Councillors will on Tuesday consider plans to build 12 homes in its place.

Matthew Smith, the council's development control officer, said: "The properties would be positioned in two separate terrace rows, one facing into Bramham Avenue and the other Bramham Road. The houses would be two-storey brickwork properties."

The proposals include one four-bedroomed house which would be detached from the others and fitted for wheelchair-bound residents.

Mr Smith said: "The scheme has arisen as the result of the extensive consultation with officers, members and Chapelfield residents, as the need for affordable housing in this location has been recognised."

The Tees Valley Housing Group drew up the plans for the area after massive support to redevelop it.

The scheme also includes putting money into regenerating the neighbouring community centre.

The plans were exhibited to residents at special sessions held in August.

Mr Smith said: "The site has been carefully identified by the council's community services for affordable housing. There is a specific need for this type of housing within York and extensive consultations have been carried out prior to the submission of this application."

Councillors will be recommended to accept the plans.
