FIVE swimmers from York City Baths Club came away from the South Yorkshire Open Masters at Ponds Forge in Sheffield with a total of ten gold medals and one bronze.

The quintet took a medal from each of the 11 races they entered, with Tim Redman leading the way with three golds, coming in the age 60-64 years category 50 metres breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 100m Individual Medley.

James Hubbard took two golds, in the 25-29 years 50m and 100m backstroke, and a bronze, in the 100m IM, in a race won by club-mate Richard Smith.

Smith also claimed gold in the 25-29 years 50m butterfly, while Stephen Wynn did likewise in the 45-49 years 100m IM.

Sue Silversides rounded it off with two golds in the women's 55-59 50m and 100m breaststroke.

Hubbard came close to winning a medal in the National Masters gala, which was also held at Ponds Forge.

He came fourth in the 25-29 200m backstroke, fifth in the 100m backstroke and sixth in the 50m backstroke, along with a 12th place in the 50m butterfly.

Stephen Lister clamed a fifth place in the 25-19 50m backstroke, 11th in the 100m IM and 23rd in the 50m freestyle, while Lee Hill finished eighth, 11th and 14th respectively in the 19-24 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and 50m freestyle.

Nine YCBC members represented Yorkshire in the ASA Inter-County Masters gala at the Hydro in Harrogate and helped the 25-strong White Rose team to overall victory over Lancashire, Cheshire and Northumberland & Durham.

Furthermore, their times and results were then entered in a countrywide competition in which 27 counties were involved and Yorkshire again came out on top, with Lancashire again second.

In the men's section, Duncan Brown won three races at the Hydro.

They were the 55+ 50 metres freestyle (in which he claimed second place in the national rankings), 50m backstroke (sixth) and 50m butterfly (second), while he also finished second (second) in the 50m breaststroke.

Alan Clarkson won (fourth) the 65+ 50m freestyle, while Steve Lister and Richard Smith claimed second places respectively in the 25+ 50m backstroke (11th) and 50m butterfly (third).

In the women's section, Helen Douthwaite was first at the Hydro and in the national standings in the 25+ 50m breaststroke.

Carol Brown took two firsts and a third respectively in the 55+ 50m backstroke (sixth), 50m butterfly (eighth) and 50m freestyle (11th), while Nadine Thrower was first and second in the 25+ 50m backstroke (third) and 50m butterfly (eighth).

Pat Baxter was second in both the 65+ 50m breaststroke (seventh) and 50m freestyle (eighth) and third in the 50m backstroke (tenth).

Sue Silversides rounded it off with a second (11th) in the 55+ 50m breaststroke.
