NORTH Yorkshire parents coming to terms with the death of their baby will soon be able to grieve in a peaceful, purpose-built hospital suite.

The Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society (SANDS) Suite in Harrogate District Hospital's maternity unit is to be opened next Tuesday to provide bereaved parents with the opportunity to stay in private, homely surroundings with peace and dignity.

The private suite, complete with en-suite facilities, provides a quiet area allowing the baby to stay with parents for as long as is necessary.

The suite provides a better environment and experience for those suffering tragic circumstances, with sufficient space for other family members to visit and for a partner to stay overnight. The suite is situated in a peaceful area of the unit, but sufficiently close to allow necessary treatment and observation by staff.

The new room has been constructed as part of the recent refurbishment and upgrading of the maternity unit funded by the Department of Health.

However, the furniture and soft furnishing, including a television, are the result of financial support from SANDS, personal donations from bereaved parents and other members of the public.

SANDS has also been instrumental in arranging generous support from the Harrogate Co-op, Marks & Spencer and Homebase to fit out the suite.

The suite will be opened by representatives from Harrogate Co-op and Marks & Spencer. It will be attended by members of SANDS and staff from the hospital.
