A CLERGYMAN has conjured up a magical way of getting the Christian message across.
The Rev Roger Dunlop, Methodist minister for Heworth, Stamford Bridge and Dunnington, performs magic tricks at parties, church services and school assemblies across the York area.
He first became interested in the ancient art when he was eight and someone bought bought him a box of tricks.
"It's very good fun and is a marvellous visual aid to help me get the Christian message across," said Roger.
"It gives me a really good rapport with the school kids. They love it when I do tricks in assemblies. Magic can really break down barriers."
The father-of-two regularly attends meetings of the York Society of Magicians where he swaps tricks and picks up ideas. He is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians.
At last Sunday's family carol service at Heworth Methodist Church, Roger changed some socks in a magical washing machine to illustrate a point during his sermon.
"My kids really enjoy my performances and I often do tricks for them at home," he said.
