THIS is the moment when one of Britain's most senior clergymen came face-to-face with the devil incarnate - and at a York village school.
But the Archbishop of York, Dr David Hope, did not appear too upset by this potentially fiery encounter between "the doctor and the devil".
Dr Hope was introduced to little demon Marie Hollander when visited Archbishop of York's CE Junior School, at Bishopthorpe. He said: "I never expected to be so pleased to meet the devil."
The nine-year-old was taking part in the school production The Good, The Bad And The Donkey.
Dean Beecham, head teacher, said: "I think he was fine about it, he is very nice when he comes into school and puts everyone at ease.
"He did make a comment about how he would be interested to see his picture in the Evening Press with a devil."
All the children at the school took part in the performance which was also watched by more than 150 parents and friends.
Mr Beecham said: "We're always very pleased to see the Archbishop - he gives the occasion a real lift."
