A £4.5 MILLION flyover scheme which will close a lethal gap on the A64 moved closer today after the Highways Agency put the project out to tender.

The Government roads body is asking for civil engineering firms to come forward and bid for the ambitious scheme, which will replace the existing junctions at Colton Lane and Redhill Field Lane.

It will also lead to the permanent closure of the central reservation gap at Bilbrough Top Services and Redhill Field Lane, and the closure of the existing access to the Little Chef.

The Highways Agency announced in September that it had decided the gap in the dual carriageway central reservation must close when work starts on construction of a new flyover next spring.

That move came only a week after a fatal accident involving a 19-year-old student, whose mother was manoeuvring through the notorious blackspot.

The successful bidder will have no more than 60 weeks, from the possession date, to complete the works.

Interested companies have until January 21 to register their interest and until March 3, next year, to apply to the Highways Agency for the contract.
