A TOTAL of five schools in York had test results upgraded after they were sent back.

English SATS exams - tests given to 14-year-old school pupils - were sent back from Fulford School, Huntington School, All Saints' RC School, Archbishop Holgate CE School and Oaklands School (Acomb)..

But the head teacher of one of the schools, Archbishop Holgate, says despite the results being wrong, he believes the system of examinations is going to improve.

Fifty-three English SATS at Archbishop Holgate school were upgraded out of a batch of 153 sent back after a teacher questioned the grades.

Head teacher John Harris said the re-marking was done extremely well and very quickly.

He said: "The exam system is stretched to the limit, and it is encouraging that the Government is taking steps to reduce the pressure that the examination boards are facing so that pupils and parents can enter the next round of examinations with confidence."
