THE highly-rated Danny Smith caught the eye again as he led the All Saints Amateur Boxing Club challenge at the Huntington Working-Men's Club.

The 15-year-old, still smarting from his defeat in the Yorkshire Championship where he was forced to fight the final and semi-final on the same day, needed just two rounds to depose of the challenge of Darlington's Sonny Ward with a thrilling display.

And in a double delight for the Smith family, Danny's brother Andrew was also on the winning trail.

All Saints trainer and sponsor Peter Goodrick told the Evening Press: "The Smith brothers are certainly catching the limelight, but Danny is the main one at the moment.

"His was an exceptional bout.

"His opponent was as strong as him, but Danny just pushed him away and knocked him down in the second."

Andrew Smith, 12, continued his development at the club as he overcame Alex Bedford, from Wakefield, on points.

However, while there were victories for the Smiths, Ben Fairburn and Danny Deighton both lost out on points.

Fairburn, 15, was beaten by Alex Hunter, from the promoting club Hull St Paul's, while there was controversy as Deighton saw victory awarded to Thomas Marcon (Wakefield) despite having dominated the bout.

There was also a double success from All Saints old boy Glenn Banks. Fighting in front of his home crowd Banks, who now represents St Paul's, not only won his run in with his Harrogate-based opponent on points, but his stylish display was good enough to earn him the coveted best boxer award for the night.

Unfortunately, fellow old boys Mark Draper and Luke Atkin, along with All Saints' up-and-coming duo, Danny Holmes and Andy Kirkham, had a frustrating evening after all their opponents turned up too light for their bouts.

The All Saints' contingent can now look forward to a Christmas break before they enter the rigours of the National Schoolboys' Championships in the new year.
