MORE than 1,100 would-be doctors have applied to become the first students at the Hull York Medical School (HYMS) when it opens next year.
Former police officers, intensive care nurses and A-level students are among those to apply for the 130 available places.
Interviews took place both in Hull and in York earlier this week in an attempt to whittle down the numbers and conditional offers will be made in the New Year.
HYMS is a joint venture between the Universities of York and Hull. It involves a five-year course mixing the technical and social side of medicine, with teaching in hospitals and general practices.
