TRAFFIC officers policing the roads of York and Selby launched their Christmas crackdown on drink-driving today with one simple message - "Just don't do it".

Following a shocking rise in the number of people caught over the limit while at the wheel, members of the Central Area Road Policing Group are urging people not to touch a drop if they intend to get behind the wheel this festive season.

Five people were caught drink-driving in the York and Selby area at the weekend, and in November, a shocking 38 people were caught. On average, police normally see about 12 cases a month.

Worringly, breathalyser tests showed the majority of those caught in November were more than three times the legal limit - the equivalent of eight pints of beer.

To combat this alarming trend, teams of uniformed officers have started mounting random checks on motorists on the main routes in and around York and Selby.

This year's campaign will not only target motorists in the late evening, but also people heading home in the early evening from office parties as well as "morning -after" drivers who are still over the limit from the amount of alcohol they consumed the night before.

Officers want to hit home the message that drink-drivers ultimately risk causing someone's death as well as facing stiff legal penalties.

Acting Sergeant Geoff Brown, of the Tadcaster-based road policing group, said: "It is clear that the drinking public indulge in alcohol almost around the clock, so our policing policy needs to reflect this. So whether you've had a few after work, been out on the town for the night, or partied until dawn with friends, we will be waiting and watching.

"When we stop a car and suspect a driver has been drinking we will conduct a breathalyser test. The best outcome would be for us to undertake no tests and just be able to give our good wishes to the responsible driving public."

Jane Mowat, director of Safer York Partnership, added: "My message to people is, 'Have a great and safe Christmas and stay alive for the New Year'. By all means have a drink, but take a bus or a taxi, or stay with friends. It really isn't worth the risk."
