YORK Jobcentre Plus employee Nigel Pendleton got a big surprise when he attended a Regional Newspaper Award luncheon hosted by Minister for Pensions Ian McCartney and former ITN newsreader Carol Barnes at London's Lancaster House.
The event recognised the achievements of the company category awards winners for their work in tackling age discrimination, and promoting the benefits of mixed age workforces.
Nigel, who works at the Clifford Street office, was presented with an Outstanding Achievement award for his inspiring work and enthusiasm in helping to overcome the problems of ageism in the workplace. He was invited to join Mr McCartney and Secretary of State Andrew Smith at an evening reception held at No 11 Downing Street.
New MORI research findings, showed that one in five people have been discriminated against in the workplace, and 38 per cent of that discrimination was based upon age. The Regional Newspaper Awards are an opportunity for local businesses and individuals like Nigel to prove that a birth certificate should not be allowed to become a P45.
