YORK residents Grace Page and Julian Fell showed the nation their word and number power by getting through to today's Countdown showdown.

This afternoon the two of them were facing each other in the long-awaited final of the popular afternoon quiz show hosted by Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderman. A-level student Julian, 18, from Woodthorpe, said being on the programme was a wonderful experience, and one that had brought him unexpected fame.

"I've been recognised by quite a few people since the finals," he said.

"The highlight of it has been meeting all the people at Yorkshire Television as well as the contestants.

"I never thought I would get through to the finals, but I did."

Former school secretary Grace said her family had convinced her to enter after being a sitting room contestant for 12 years.

"At first I was very nervous," she said. "But I'll never forget the relief of getting through to the finals. It's been an interesting experience and very friendly."

Selby resident George Greenhough also did well, making it through to the semi-finals before he was knocked out.
