A MULTI-million pound defence system for the East Coast is being completed ahead of schedule.
The £33.6 million project at Scarborough is now into its second season with almost 50 per cent of the rock armour in place.
The rock defences will combine with a one-metre high wall to protect the town against the battering it gets from the North Sea.
Councillor Godfrey Allanson, cabinet member for environment and transport, praised the speed of work done in the first season which a mild winter made possible.
He said: "Excellent progress has been made so far, and this is a truly major undertaking nothing of its kind or scale has been seen in this part of the country for many years."
