A YORK man was rescued from his burning flat after a chip pan fire got out of control.

Three other people were evacuated from surrounding apartments in Bishopthorpe Road as firefighters battled to control dense smoke flooding through the building.

Fire chiefs were called at about 2.23am yesterday morning, after the occupants of a second floor flat rang emergency services to say that a blaze was under way at a nearby bedsit.

Firefighters rescued the man, who was taken to York Hospital suffering from the effects of inhaling smoke.

A North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "There was a fire in one of the second floor bedsits at the converted flats. There is fire damage and smoke damage and there is also smoke damage to the second floor landing.

"We received a call from the two occupants in one of the other bedsits. We rescued one male from the flat of origin.

"He was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. Two other males were led to safety and a gentleman in a ground floor flat was also led to safety."
