TIDY-minded pensioner Jack Rossington will be able to sweep in safety thanks to a kind-hearted York scaffolder.

As recently reported in the Evening Press, Jack, of Huntington Road, York, sweeps up leaves and collects rubbish from the streets round his home from 4am until dusk every day. After reading the story, scaffolder Len Smith was out buying a waterproof jacket, and decided to buy Jack a fluorescent vest. Len said: "With the dark nights and dark mornings I thought it was safer if he had something high visibility on. Call it a Christmas present for him, season of goodwill and all that."

Jack's friend and carer, who asked to be named only as Mr Taylor, said: "Jack is very pleased with it and is really grateful to Len for the thought. He does that many hours out there it will come in very useful for him."
