RAILWAY worker John Harrand is being driven up the wall by out-of-control cars.

His jinxed front wall has just been demolished - for the third time in six months.

To make matters worse, the latest incident was just a fortnight after he had finished rebuilding the 4ft high brick wall after it was knocked down in yet another crash.

Mr Harrand, who lives at the side of the A19 at Burn, near Selby, thought it was a joke when a workmate rang to say he had just passed his house and his wall was in pieces again.

He said: "It's getting beyond a joke and I'm totally cheesed off. This is the seventh time in five years that the wall has been demolished by out-of-control cars.

"When I received the phone call from my workmate I couldn't believe it - I felt sick to the stomach. I'm starting to lose sympathy with these drivers."

Mr Harrand said: "I had just finished rebuilding the wall and decided to strengthen it with a brick pillar but it didn't do any good.

"I found the pillar, still in one piece, in the middle of my front garden. He must have given it a fair old whack.

"Fortunately my postbox and 'honey for sale' sign are still intact."

Work on a new £45,000 traffic calming scheme is due to start in February and villagers said today that it could not come soon enough.

Burn Parish Council chairman Gordon Holmes said: "At least four walls have had to be rebuilt this year after being demolished by cars coming round a right-hand bend from the Doncaster direction.

"Someone is going to be killed before much longer because these accidents were only a few yards from a bus stop.

"We welcome the traffic calming but the only real solution is a new Burn bypass.

"We're told that is now scheduled for 2006 but it all depends on the Government releasing the necessary funds."
