VISCOUNT Allendale, who has died aged 80, was a steward at York Racecourse for many years before his retirement and was well known in horse racing circles as a breeder and owner.

He was a former chairman of the course at Newcastle and also a steward at Ripon, Thirsk, Carlisle, Newmarket and Ascot and served two terms as a Jockey Club steward.

Lord Allendale bred his own horses and kept many of them with the trainer Bill Elsey at Norton.

Among his best were Tenterhooks, which won the Queen's Vase at Ascot and the Goodwood Cup in 1957, and Alignment, winner of the Ebor Handicap at York in 1969.

Mark Henry, named after one of his three sons, won 15 cups in the late 1970s including wins at Ayr in all three disciplines, flat, hurdling and steeplechasing.

Viscount Allendale was born at Bretton Park, near Wakefield, and lived for many years at Bywell Hall, Stocksfield-on-Tyne near Newcastle.

A service of thanksgiving will be at Hexham Abbey on Monday at 11.30am following a private funeral.
