THE cold snap that has had everyone shivering was captured in this photograph of ice over Hagg Bridge, on Pocklington Canal.
This picture, taken by Evening Press staff photographer Paul Baker, shows the crisp landscape left after the snow and ice had settled, and the flooding caused by the swollen canal.
Looking at the temperatures it is no surprise there was a flurry of wintry showers.
On Monday night the mercury fell to minus three degrees centigrade.
Predictions for today were no warmer, with temperatures expected to be down between minus two and minus four degrees centigrade, with light snow towards the coast.
But even with the light showers and snow there is no immediate threat of floods.
A spokesman from the PA weather centre said: "One centimetre of snow is the equivalent of one millimetre of rain, and 25 to 30 mm of rain is needed for the rivers to flood."
Indeed, it is hoped that the cold spell will have river levels falling, not rising.
The weather looks set to get a little milder over the weekend. Predictions have temperatures on Friday at zero degrees, while on Saturday they look set to peak at a comparatively warm one degree centigrade.
