YORK gave themselves a chance of qualifying from their group when they beat Hull 'A' 74-73 in the Top Ten Tournament.

At home, David Stroughair and Graham Instone had a fantastic 29-15 win in the pairs after being 13-3 down with nine ends gone. In the triples Frank Turner, John Emmerson and John Walker were involved in a tight game. There was only one end where more than a two was scored and that was a three on the seventh to the visitors who went on to win 16-12.

At Hull, Ian Boyle had an impressive 21-9 win in the singles against Alan Croft. But Paul Mooring, Phil Emmerson, Graham Brooke and Dudley Williams had a miserable game in the fours, trailing 28-5 with six ends to play but, vitally to the final aggregate score, they picked up a four on the penultimate end before dropping a further single going down 33-12.

York are top of the group having played one game more than second placed Hull 'B' who are five points behind and Hull 'A' who are 12 points adrift.

Meanwhile, York's Under-18's team strengthened their position at the top of the Yorkshire League when they convincingly beat second-placed Thornaby 'A' 37-13 to collect the maximum six points.

Philip Herridge, Josh Cahill and Adam Liddell got off to a flier leading 13-0 after only five ends on their way to a comfortable 18-9 victory.

Liam Cahill, Adam Tattersall and Jamie Lee had their hands full against their opposing skip Laura Copland, who kept restricting the home team to singles or twos.

However, the home side were playing well and kept up the pressure to win 19-4 in emphatic style.

New Earswick's game at Hornsea was called off due to the bad road conditions.
