PUBLIC drinking bans could be rolled out across Hambleton following growing fears over alcohol-related vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
The bans, if approved by councillors at a cabinet meeting on January 23, will give police the power to stop anyone drinking in a designated "no alcohol zone".
Public consultations on imposing bans at known trouble spots like Bullamoor Park, Applegarth and High Green in Northallerton are due to start soon, following numerous complaints from residents over gangs of youths openly drinking in public, many of whom are believed responsible for nuisance behaviour and vandalism.
"The areas already designated have the full support of the police," said Cyril Dyke, Hambleton's head of corporate services.
"However, a number of councillors said they felt the problem was not restricted to Northallerton and there should be powers to impose a ban anywhere in the district.
"As a result it will now be put to the council to consider giving the authority to authorise bans where needed."
