CENTENARIAN Harold Barrett today revealed his secret for long life - hard work and a regular tot of whisky.

And, true to form, Mr Barrett celebrated his 100th birthday at his home, in Main Street, North Duffield, near Selby, by sharing a small bottle of whisky with the village milkman.

Mr Barrett, who was born and bred in North Duffield, shares a home with his partner, Mary, 88.

The couple have been together for 50 years, but never got married because they "just didn't get round to it".

A farmworker all his working life until he retired at 67, Mr Barrett still enjoys the odd cigarette, as well as his beloved whisky.

Apart from a birthday cake and visits from villagers, there was no party as such because Mr Barrett doesn't like a lot of fuss.

One family member said: "He loves a chat and a laugh, but just wanted a quiet do.

"He's still got a very lively mind and gets about on two sticks. He's absolutely marvellous for his age."

Mr Barrett puts his longevity down to hard work, his regular tot of whisky and everything in moderation.

His partner, Mary, said: "He's still got a good appetite and his favourite is still roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. He says you can't beat it."

Mr Barrett received more than 30 birthday cards from well-wishers, with pride of place going to a congratulatory telegram from the Queen.
