PUPILS at a York school got their 25th birthday celebrations off to a flying start by releasing more than a thousand balloons.
The first of the balloon messages to be returned to Headlands Primary School, in Haxby, came back from Crewe, in Cheshire, today.
Head teacher Mike Schofield said the balloon release marked the start of year-long celebrations which would also include a garden party in June. The school opened in 1978 with only 161 pupils, a head and five teachers. The school now has 259 children, and ten teachers.
Mr Schofield said: "The children really enjoyed the launch. They sang Happy Birthday and did a count-down."
The launch raised £1,000 to buy books.
