YORK villagers have been urged to make their views count during discussions over an important document that will shape the future of their community.

Residents in Heslington have their first opportunity tonight to participate in the preparation of a design statement for the village.

Parish council vice-chairwoman Susan Stern said the meeting comes at a time of "extraordinary change" in the village as the University of York plans a massive campus extension.

"We all acknowledge that this is a modern community and we do not want cows grazing in Main Street," she said.

"But this is a really appropriate time to launch this and get the Heslington community to look at itself in a very detailed way."

She said that although many property developers saw the village as a "peachy area", it remains a conservation site and many residents wish to maintain its character.

The parish council and the village trust have invited all residents to participate in the meeting at Lord Deramore's School, School Lane, Heslington, at 7.30pm.
