TONY Blair is prepared to spend millions of pounds on the impending war with Iraq, yet when it comes to providing for our children's education the cost is too high.

A university education will soon become even more elitist with only the middle to upper class families able to afford the proposed £3,000-a-year fees.

The next Isaac Newton will not necessarily be from a middle class background.

Debt for students will triple, and will rise to approximately £15,000 to get a degree.

The Government's reason for not investing in education is because it expects the university intake to increase to between 43 and 50 per cent. They refuse to even contemplate this expenditure.

How can our Government renege on providing education for all when past experience has shown our very existence has hinged on our technical expertise?

Ultimately, we must learn to invest in our future, and turn "swords into ploughshares" - or in this case university grants.
