POLICE in East Yorkshire are looking to swell their crime fighting ranks as they take part in a national drive to recruit special constables this weekend.

There are currently 59 Specials covering the East Riding of Yorkshire, headed by a Special Commandant, and the officers make up one of four divisions of Special Constables within Humberside Police.

Chief Supt Graham Di Duca, head of operations, said: "Within Humberside Police Special Constables have been integrated into the local policing structure and work alongside 'regular' officers as part of the local policing teams.

"They wear the same uniform as regular officers, including helmets, and are tasked, deployed and supervised no differently to regular officers."

He added: "They are a very important part of policing and can make a significant contribution to the quality of life and policing style of Humberside Police.

"They make a valuable contribution by assisting their full time colleagues in providing highly visible foot patrols as well as helping out on special occasions."

Special constables will be carrying out their duties as normal over National Specials Weekend and anyone interested in joining their ranks should ring 01482 597097.
